NOT BY POWER

Good Morning!

I pray all is going well with you this morning –

It is officially the last day of 2020

It is the official first day of 2021 for our friends in Tonga

We made it! 

And, I think most would agree, it has not been by our own power

It is certainly a time to give thanks to the LORD who has carried us by His strength – Who has sustained us by His power

 


I heard a verse yesterday as I was driving to pick my son up from work

The announcer was sharing their verse of the day:

She read, ‘The eyes of the LORD search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him.’ II Chronicles 16:9

It caught my attention because it is one of my favorite verses in the Bible –

It also caught my attention because that is not the version I have committed to memory

The New King James Version of that verse – along with other translations – reads:

‘For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the earth to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose hearts are loyal to Him.’ II Chronicles 16:9 NKJV

 

BLESSINGS on PURPOSE

The LORD God Almighty, He looks for opportunities to show Himself strong on our behalf

This a reason why I often source multiple Bible translations to ensure I am doing everything I can to understand the truest intent of the scripture.

It is one thing when He strengthens us to accomplish a task

It is an entirely different matter when the LORD takes responsibility for the task Himself

We are thankful when He strengthens us but we are awestruck when He does it!

 

‘This is what the LORD says to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit’, says the LORD Almighty’ Zechariah 4:6 NIV

 

This is the word of Adonai to Z’rubavel: ‘Not by force, and not by power, but by My Spirit,’ says Adonai-Tzva’ot.Zechariah 4:6 CJB

 

‘This is the message from the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Your help will not come from your own strength and power. No, your help will come from My Spirit.’ This is what the Lord All-Powerful says. Zechariah 4:6 ERV

 

‘The angel told me to give Zerubbabel this message from the Lord: “You will succeed, not by military might or by your own strength, but by My Spirit. Zechariah 4:6 GNT

 

AND FOR YOU, MY DEAR FRIEND:

This is the word of the LORD to [INSERT YOUR NAME HERE], saying, ‘Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit’, says the LORD of hosts.’

 

It was not by our strength, power, military might or superior intellect in 2020

It will not be by our muscle, agility, prowess or planning in 2021

IT IS THE LORD – AND THE LORD ALONE

He has showed Himself strong on our behalf … He will continue to do so

 

This morning –

Whether you are enjoying the final hours of 2020;

Or whether you have just ushered in the start of 2021 –

May the LORD show Himself strong on your behalf and bless you abundantly in every way.

TRUST

Here we are in the homestretch of 2020 –

I pray and trust that all is going well with you as this year winds down

Yes – there are still two more days...

One day and a wake up as we used to say when I was a military spouse

But – we are almost there and it has been quite a journey, this 2020 year

There were some expected occurrences, and many more which took me completely by surprise

Yet – as I went to sleep last night, and arose this morning, one word has been on my heart and mind: TRUST


At the beginning of this year, I wrote a post titled
‘2020: New, New Year’s Resolution’

In that post I wrote about how resolutions do not have to focus on removing something negative; but that it could center on maintaining & increasing something positive … continuing to do what proved useful and faithful:


If you placed & found your trust in the LORD in 2020 –

                Resolve to CONTINUE TRUSTING IN THE LORD

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in Him” Jeremiah 17:7

 

If you clung to your hope in the LORD in 2020 –

                Resolve to CONTINUE HOPING IN THE LORD

“For You, O LORD are my hope, my trust, O LORD, from my youth” Psalm 71:5

 

If you found strength in the LORD in 2020 –

                Resolve to CONTINUE RELYING ON THAT STRENGTH

“ Those who trust in the LORD, will renew their strength; they shall rise up on wings as eagles; they shall run and not grow weary; they shall walk and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31

 

We may not always understand the ways of the LORD –

It is difficult for us to comprehend how He is working in certain situations,

            Why He is allowing them to occur

But, if I have learned nothing else in almost 35-years of following Him, I have learned this:

He is faithful and can be TRUSTED

He is completely TRUSTWORTHY

He is worthy of my TRUST, He is worthy of our TRUST

 

‘Not one of all of the LORD’s good promises to Israel failed; everyone was fulfilled.’ Joshua 21:45

 

This is a cause for celebration – not just for nation of Israel but for us all:

You see, ‘The LORD is no respecter of persons …’  [Romans 2:11]

What He has done for one, He is well able to do for another

And, when it comes to the subject of the LORD making promises;

            He will always do, for all, what He has promised He will do

For, ‘God is not a man that He should lie, nor a son of man that He should change His mind. Does He speak and not act? Does He promise and not fulfill?’ Numbers 23:19

 

This morning –

My only encouragement is that you TRUST THE LORD –

He will not fail you!

I am praying that you will experience tangible instances of His presence, protection and favor

REST

Good Morning!

I pray all is going well with you this morning –

Hopefully, you have been able to get some much needed rest this holiday weekend

Rest – it is an important element which often gets overlooked

It is so essential to … REST


I know that it sometimes feels as though there is no time to REST –

Yet, our bodies [and our lives] cannot function properly without times of refreshing

There is a story in the book of I Kings which tells of a day in the life of the prophet Elijah:

‘He sat down under a solitary broom tree and prayed that he might die.’ I Kings 19:4

 

Here we have a mighty man of God, on the heels of a great victory

            He had called down fire from heaven … and it fell! I Kings 18:38

Yet, here he is one chapter later completely despondent

What happened?

The battle had exhausted him and left him utterly undernourished – spiritually & physically

And what was God’s prescription?

What grand solution did Jehovah-Rophe, the LORD who heals, offer?

REST, EAT, GET IN THE PRESENCE OF GOD

‘Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep. All at once an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” … He ate and drank and then lay down again. The angel of the LORD came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat for the journey is too much for you.”' I Kings 19:5-7

 

THE JOURNEY IS TOO MUCH

We have not had to call down fire from heaven –

Yet many of us have felt that the journey through 2020 has been too much, ‘way too much’

But – take heart

Despite the reality of the challenges, there still remains a REST

‘Thus far, you have survived 100% of the toughest moments life has thrown your way.’

 

LIKE AN INFANT

I had a discussion a while back with my friend where I was sharing the importance of REST

I told her there are times when I get restless, impatient and downright cranky;

            whining and sometimes crying; wanting to be consoled and left alone all at once

In those moments, I shared with her, I imagine a scene plays out in heaven…

The angels are gathered around the throne and they are completely perplexed:

‘My LORD, WHAT is wrong with her?!’

And I imagine the LORD calmly responding,

‘She’s fine … she just needs a nap. She’s tired and hungry and she needs her Heavenly Father.’

 

It used to be that way when my sons were infants. It was not often but they would have those moments when they would start to get ‘fussy’. They were tired, or hungry [sometimes both] and they needed REST! Sometimes all they needed was to know that I was close by, that I was present ...and then they could REST.

 

It is amazing what a little rest will do – emotionally, spiritually and physically

It also helps our perspective, so we may see more clearly

But the act of rest it is not a one-time occurrence

We must be intentional about seeking out regular moments of rest & rejuvenation

Forty days after that encounter with the angel of the LORD, Elijah was in a cave;

And the LORD came to him where he was:

‘The LORD said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by.” I Kings 19:11

Even if you are too weary from the current journey and for the next journey,

The LORD will meet you right where you are

He is the Omni-Present One there is no escaping His presence

 

HIS PRESENCE IS KEY

The refueling – whatever that may look like – is great

            Water, food, exercise, prayer, meditation

The rest – in all its forms – is helpful

            Naps, sleep, sitting in silence

But the getting in the presence of the LORD – it is absolutely essential

His presence is key!

 

This morning –

Whether you only have today or the remainder of this week heading into the new year;

Be intentional about carving out meaningful moments of rest, in His presence

Take time to pursue and enjoy REST –

recovering from the present journey and preparing for all that is to come

NEVER-ENDING

Good Morning!

I pray all is going well with you this morning –

Merry Day-After Christmas

Holding on the ‘merriness’ – that is a challenge , believe me, I know

Generally, this day brings forth silent and spoken declarations of

            ‘I’m glad it’s over!’

And I know Christmas may not have been what everyone hoped for –

My best friend unable to fully enjoy Christmas because her mom in the hospital

My son’s unable to fully enjoy Christmas because his mom contracted COVID-19; my son’s other friend unable to fully enjoy Christmas because his dad, a surgeon, has to quarantine to avoid COVID-19 – both are waiting to ‘do Christmas’ in January

The challenges of 2020 – and life in general – do not stop on Christmas day or the day after;

But neither do the blessings and peace which are made available because of Jesus

The blessings of the LORD are NEVER-ENDING!

 ‘Of the greatness of His government and peace there will be no end.’ Isaiah 7:9

This means that the LORD is always in control and His peace is constant

No season ending;

No after-Christmas sale;

No thwarted plans for celebration;

Not even an explosion on Christmas day in Nashville, TN;

No ‘thing’ can put an end to the works of God – for His presence & peace to rule in our lives

Yet – we still must choose, every day, to receive all of who He is and what He brings

Trust me, it is a battle worth contending for!

His rule, His reign, His peace – they are for every season

The celebration of His presences is not just for the Christmas season – it is forever

IT IS NEVER-ENDING!


This morning – let nothing rob you of the peace & joy made available through JESUS

Keep trusting, keep hoping, keep believing

Keep embracing all of who He is  – all of His attributes of love, joy, peace, power & provision

He is the LORD God Almighty!

May the LORD of peace Himself give you peace at all times in every way. The LORD be with you all’  2 Thessalonians 3:16

THE WORD OF GOD

 Merry Christmas!

I pray all is going well with you this morning –

I know some of you are well into December 25th at this point

When my sons spoke to their dad yesterday, he was already enjoying Christmas morning

In fact, he was out doing his morning exercises

I think it is admirable that he does not break routine even on Christmas Day

Yet – there was One who broke routine on the very first Christmas so long ago

Jesus came to break our routine

His birth separated time – his actions reflected in His name ‘Emmanuel’

 


The Word Became Flesh and Dwelt Among Us

The beginning of that section of scripture notes:

‘In the beginning as the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made. In Him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it’ John 1:1-5

 

THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD HAD COME

Jesus – the light of the world – had come for us all

AND HE STILL SHINES!

 

Everything He was, He still is and shall be forever –

Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today and forevermore [Hebrews 13:8]

He is still Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, our Prince of Peace

What a tremendous blessing!

 

This morning –

Whether you are just starting your Christmas morning,

Or whether you are moving toward the end of your Christmas day;

May the blessings of the LORD abound in your heart and home, today and always

May the Blessing from the LORD – Jesus Christ – be the center of your focus

I pray you have a tremendously blessed day today

THE WONDER

Good Morning!

I pray all is going well with you this morning –

Do you believe it is December 24th ?

It is not the ‘night before Christmas’ as the famous old poem notes, 

But, it is the morning before Christmas –

The little ones are waking up with anticipation – one more day until Christmas!

The ‘big’ ones are waking up with trepidation – still a few more gifts to get & planning to do

The season continues to awaken the feelings of awe & wonder

CHRISTMAS EVE is here!

 


It truly is a WONDER-FILLED time of year

A time of year where we can and should focus on the overwhelming LOVE OF GOD

But this takes effort – especially in a year like 2020

There are so many distractions & things that try to steal the wonder of this season:

Perhaps you have some errands to run this morning –

Perhaps Christmas is not looking quite the way you would have imagined or desired

Perhaps you are feeling a bit underwhelmed due to challenges and loss

            I know it is difficult

This is my first Christmas without my mom, where I will not get to see her sweet face on Christmas day – the very first time in forty-nine years

But I know, she is having a glorious time in heaven this Christmas

My circumstances do not define His nature or character

 

‘Who is like You, O LORD …

majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders?’

Exodus 15:11

Know this today –

The Wonderful Counselor is still very much in the business of working WONDERS

May the God of all peace guard your hearts and minds this Christmas Eve

I pray you will stay safe and that joy will abound!

Good Morning!

I pray all is going well with you this morning –

It is the middle of the week

And, the message today is short and sweet: REJOICE!


Remember it is not about where you are or what you have –

Jesus was born in a manager yet was still abundantly blessed

There are a million reasons to REJOICE!

EMMANUEL

I pray all is going well with you this morning –

We are one day closer to Christmas

I feel like a child sometimes with my anticipation

But, if I am honest, my feelings are somewhat conflicted

I am excited about the countdown and Christmas day

But, I am also sad because I know it marks the end of this beautiful season;

A season which celebrates the birth of Jesus – EMMANUEL, GOD WITH US

Yet I am still full of gratitude and recognize reasons for celebration

Though a season may end, His presence with us never does – GOD IS WITH US ALWAYS


Last night was enjoying the peaceful atmosphere in my home –

The lights, the smell of pine, the candles and relaxing music

I listening to my Christmas ‘playlist’ late into the evening

And on that list was an old song by an artist named Bebo Norman

The song is ‘Come and Worship’

I absolutely love that song and find myself listening to it every Christmas season

Generally speaking, I am drawn to the words of a song and not just the sound

Well, this song is no different –

After over ten years of listening to it, I am still in awe every time over one particular line:

‘God with man is now residing’

It is such a powerful statement and so succinctly captures the entire reason for this season

 

EMMANUEL – GOD WITH US

I am still amazed that Jesus would vacate heaven and agree to come as Child;

            Just so that He could save us, so He could save me

It is simply incredible!

 

Today’s post is not long

This post, along with this season, is a time for individual reflection

It is time to remember the gift that was given and that keeps on giving –

EMMANUEL – GOD WITH US

For all the hurting, grieving, lonely, hopeless and heartsick – God is with you

For all the joy-filled, cruising through life, having a good time – God is with you

For those who do not know Him, filled with questions and doubts – God is with you too

 

Psalm 139:7-10 notes:

Where can I go from Your Spirit?

Or where can I flee from Your presence?

If I ascend into heaven, You are there;

If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.

If I take the wings of the morning,

And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,

Even there Your hand shall lead me,

And Your right hand shall hold me.

 

That entire Psalm is so amazing!

If you have a moment you should read it – especially verses 1-18

 

The LORD GOD Almighty, the Creator of the universe – is with us

He has promised He will never leave or forsake His children

What a marvelous promise!

 

This morning – I am praying for you

I am praying that you would experience His presence is a tangible way –

            In an intimate and personal and credible way

He is with us always

May He open our eyes to see Him more clearly

I hope you are having a blessed Christmas Season …

CHRISTMAS PLAYLIST

THE ULTIMATE GIFT

Good Morning

I pray all is going well with you this morning –

Happy Monday!

I had every intention of getting this post up first thing this morning

But then I got side-tracked …

I took care of a couple of chores and then decided to bake

            Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies for my guys … YUM!

This year has been particularly challenging – for my waistline

You see, I typically GIFT my baked goods

But I really do not feel like going through the hassle of packing and shipping

So, we have had a smorgasbord of treats –

Cookie assortments, bourbon balls, and cakes are up next (rum & red velvet for Christmas Eve)

It’s the most ‘calorie-filled’ time of the year!

But – treats are not the subject of our post today

GIFTS – and THE ULTIMATE GIFT in particular is the subject of our post today


I thought about this post as I was typing up one of the verses for yesterday’s post:

‘God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.’ John 3:16

 

I was typing the verse from memory but then went to look at the actual text:

I had typed, ‘that whosoever believes in Him would not perish’. Yet, when I looked at the NKJV and KJV of the Bible, it notes, ‘… that whoever believes in Him should not perish …’

It seems a simple exchange, ‘would’ instead of ‘should’

But as I thought about it more, I understood why it said ‘should’

 

So – what does this have to do with GIFTS?

‘God so love the world that He gave …’

What did He give?

He gave us all an incredible GIFT

What was that GIFT?

‘… He gave His only begotten Son’

 Why did He give us this PRECIOUS, MOST ULTIMATE GIFT?

‘… that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.’

 

‘God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.’


 
Jesus is the Indescribable and Ultimate Gift –

And, He was given so that none of the LORD’s creation should perish;

That none should have to spend a life on earth or eternity thereafter – separated from Him

But the truth of the matter is that many can and still will

You see, a gift not given, is no gift at all – kind of like my treats this year

But the LORD already tackled the issue of giving – He gave the very best gift He could

that Gift being Jesus

And Jesus keeps the gift-giving going by blessing those who believe with the Gift of the Holy Spirit [discussion for another day]

But the gift-giving is only part of the solution to the problem

Gift receiving is the second and critical portion of the equation

A gift not given is no gift at all

But, a gift given and not received – it is a gift of no effect to the recipient

If I am blessed with the ultimate gift but choose not to receive it, I am still gift-less

 

THE ULTIMATE GIFT

Understand – when it comes to the subject of salvation

While none should perish … many will perish because they refuse to accept the GIFT

 

‘If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is LORD and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.’ Romans 10:9

 

‘For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through Him.’ John 3:17

 

‘There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.’ Acts 4:12

 

‘For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.’ Ephesians 2:8

 

JESUS CHRIST – the indescribable, amazing and ultimate GIFT

And you do not need to wait until Christmas Morning to receive, open and enjoy this GIFT!

THANKSGIVING ... YES, THANKSGIVING!

I pray all is going well for you this morning –

It is five days until Christmas

It is actually hard to believe we are almost there

I was talking to my youngest son a couple of days ago and he said,

‘This has been the longest and shortest year ever’

I would have to agree with him

However, whatever has transpired, there are so many reasons for THANKSGIVING

 


It is a bit odd to title a message ‘THANKSGIVING’ at this time of year

However, the giving of thanks is not dictated by a day on the calendar

It is not relegated to a specific time of year

No, true gratitude is constant …

It can and should be expressed as often as the feelings of thankfulness arise

 

There are so many reasons and opportunities to give thanks –

Do you have peace in your home? Give Thanks …

Do you have a home? Give Thanks …

Did God breathe into your lungs all through the night? Give Thanks …

Did He wake you up this morning? It is reason for Thanksgiving …

We possess many blessings – if we will but take the time to notice them

 

This year has been challenging for many –

And you may say that it has been a year of great loss individually

I understand – it has been a challenging year for me as well, one with great loss

Yet I choose to thank the LORD for His goodness and His faithfulness.

Everyone has something to be thankful for

 

‘Rejoice in the LORD always. Again I say: Rejoice!’ Philippians 4:4

 

The reason for the season –

Over the years I have heard that phrase shared as a means to help people focus;

It is often spoken to remind others that Jesus is the reason for the Christmas season

But the truth is, Jesus is the reason for every season

‘God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.’ John 3:16

 

The only thing that sustains us from season to season …

            Is the love, grace and mercy of the LORD God Almighty

            Made possible because of the life, death & resurrection of Jesus

His birth would have been meaningless without his life, death & resurrection,

            without Him conquering the power of death, hell and the grave

And He did that for us!

That is certainly a cause for THANKSGIVING!

 

So, ‘Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.’ I Thessalonians 5:16-18

 

Today – my prayers are simple

I pray that your awareness would be heightened

I pray that you would recognize and appreciate all the ways the LORD is blessing you

I pray that you would take time to express your gratitude for His most precious blessing –

            JESUS CHRIST

 

‘For unto us a Child is born, to us a Son is given,

And the government will be on His shoulders and,

He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.’ Isaiah 9:6

WHAT HE SAID ...

Happy Friday!

Here we are one short week until Christmas –

And Hanukkah ends this evening at sunset

This entire time of year is such a joy to me –

Time to slow down and spend quality time with friends & family;

Time to enjoy simple pleasures and reflect on all of the blessings of the LORD

For me, that time of reflection also includes a journey through my mental file cabinet

It is a time for me to remember all the things which God has spoken to me

It fills me with hope and is a source of great encouragement – thinking on what He spoke


 

As I did my devotionals this morning, I came across this section of scripture:

‘Praise be to the LORD, the God of Israel because He has come to His people and redeemed them. He has risen up a horn of salvation for us in the house of His servant David (as He said through His holy prophets of long ago)…’ Luke 1:68-70

 

This verse of scripture recounts words spoken by Zechariah, father of John the Baptist

He was speaking of the coming of Jesus

‘Praise be to the LORD, the God of Israel because He has come to His people and redeemed them … (as He said through His holy prophets of long ago)’

 

Indeed, this fulfillment of prophecy was a long time coming

The words spoken to the prophets were delivered multiple generations before Jesus’ birth

The promise was in motion before any record of it ever occurred in the earth

For Jesus is the Lamb who was slain before the foundation of the world [Rev. 13:8]

Yet every promise God makes is sure to come to pass

‘For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through Him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.’ II Corinthians 1:20

What He Spoke Will Always Come to Pass

 

Again – what He spoke will always come to pass

However – the timing is not always what we expect, nor the process

Yet – we can TRUST His words and His ways

His thoughts are above our own [Isaiah 55:9]

He makes all things perfect in its time [Ecclesiastes 3:11]

Not one of His promises has ever failed [Joshua 21:45]

What He Spoke Will Always Come to Pass

 

Some promises will spring to form suddenly –

As it did at creation when He spoke the worlds into existence [Psalm 33:6-9]

Some will take time –

Like the promise of a child to Abram and Sarai,

a promise not fulfilled until Abraham was 100-years old [Genesis 21:5]

Some promises will take months –

Like the promise to Mary & Joseph regarding the birth of Jesus [Luke 1 & 2]

Some will be fulfilled in a day –

Like the promise to the thief hanging on cross next Jesus at His crucifixion [Luke 23:43]

What He Spoke Will Always Come to Pass

 

TRUST & BELIEVE

No matter what God has spoken to you – no matter when He spoke it

TRUST the LORD you God to do exactly what He promised

‘God is not a man that He should lie, nor a son of man that He should change His mind. Does He speak and not act? Does He promise and not fulfill?’ Numbers 23:19

If He spoke, He will also do it

What He Spoke Will Always Come to Pass

 

I am praying for you this morning –

I am praying you will experience the presence of God is a very tangible way

– today and every day

Keep expecting a marvelous manifestation of every promise He has made you
